GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUB

Our Past and Our Future

The Shorewood Woman’s Club was founded in 1936 by three community leaders: Mrs. Clarence Benton, Mrs. Earl Gile and Mrs. William Hubbard who gathered friends as Charter members. They met for many years in churches and later at Hubbard Park.

For more than 30 years the Club maintained a clubhouse  (leased from the Village) in the former Lodge in Hubbard Park, managed a Thrift Shop in the lower level of the Village Hall and established the first Senior Center.

From its foundation, scholarships were a priority for the use of Club funds and thanks to their legacy, the Club continues to use  the gifts of the founders to offer academic scholarships to Shorewood High School young women who demonstrate excellence in their studies and community service.  Later scholarships were expanded to include 2 scholarships for women returning to school at UWM to complete their education.

Our membership draws from the Shorewood, Fox Point, Milwaukee, Glendale, River Hills and Whitefish Bay communities.  Service projects have included the purchase of a specialized pediatric emergency bag for EMTs, sewing and gathering supplies for Operation Smile, showers for Meta House residents, 'My Stuff' bags for children entering foster care, gifts for Sojourner Family Peace Center and an annual holiday card project for Village shut-ins.

Our members especially enjoy adding toppings to the  the ice cream sundaes at  the summer Library Celebration held each July at the Shorewood Library.  But the club isn’t all work as members enjoy tours, theater productions, Bunco parties, art projects and other social events too!

For the first time, our club had one of its members, Patricia Mueller, as the recipient of 1 of the 8 national Jenny June awards in 2022.  Pat has been a member of the Shorewood Woman's Club for more than 70 years!
